As Fundación Pasos de Luz, we have begun Phase 1 of refurbishing the site granted for the construction of a Comprehensive Support Center specialized in autism and other neurodivergences. This center will serve not only the Sucre canton but also neighboring cantons and rural areas.
The building was initially in a deteriorated, unsafe condition for hosting children and families, so we have started the remodeling work outlined in our rehabilitation plan.
Our vision for the Center is to create a safe space designed for the sensory and therapeutic needs of people with autism, bringing all the Foundation’s programs together under one roof.
Initial condition of the site

Progress in Phase 1
Given the building’s starting condition and our location in a seismic zone, we carried out essential structural improvements:
- Roof replacement. The original roof had cracks, broken tiles and posed a risk of collapse.
- Restoration of basic services. This enabled a thorough cleaning of the premises.
- Space redistribution. The site was formerly a market, so walls and structures that did not meet the Center’s needs were removed.
This first step was made possible thanks to the collaboration of our North American partners and the solidarity of U.S. donors who joined our mission.
Although we have completed important initial works, we are still far from having the fully adapted space we have planned. Limited financial resources have slowed our progress.
We estimate the total budget for full rehabilitation at USD 70,000, which includes structural repairs and adaptations according to our architectural plans, and we are actively working to raise these funds through fundraising campaigns.
What impact do we expect from this rehabilitation and the Center’s opening?
Direct impact: +800 people with autism served annually.
Indirect impact: +2,000 beneficiaries (families, teachers, volunteers).
Symbolic impact: The first model center in Ecuador focused on neurodiversity and community.
This Center will not be just a building, it will be a symbol of hope for Ecuadorian families and children who currently lack specialized services for Autism, which, despite how it may appear on the surface, is a harsh reality for families and for the children and young people with autism themselves.
The Center’s design and creation are intended to offer support, dignity, innovation, and warmth to the children and families.
