Knowing your child’s sensory profile can make a big difference in their everyday concentration and behavior.
On Saturday, June 21, we held the talk “Understanding Child Neurodevelopment Through Sensory Integration: A Bridge to Self-Regulation,” presented by Licensed Occupational Therapist Gustavo Figueroa.
Sensory integration in autism refers to the brain’s ability to process and organize information from the senses. In autistic individuals, this process can be disrupted, resulting in hypersensitivity (over-reaction) or hyposensitivity (under-reaction) to stimuli such as touch, sound, or light. This can lead to behaviors like avoiding certain textures, seeking deep pressure, or having difficulty concentrating—affecting participation in daily activities and interaction with the environment.
Identifying your child’s or your students’ sensory profile and learning practical recommendations and activities to use with them will help support their progress.
